September is Prostate Cancer Awareness Month
In this challenging economy, people are working well beyond the typical retirement age. This group of males is at higher risk for prostate cancer and other prostate disease. As part of Prostate Cancer Awareness Month, September is the perfect time to encourage preventive health care for the good of your employees and the continued productivity of your business.

Common Facts about Prostate Cancer
Prostate cancer is one of the most commonly diagnosed cancers for men in the United States. Medical experts don’t know exactly what causes prostate cancer but have found that some factors increase the risk, such as:
  • Age – about two-thirds of prostate cancer are diagnosed in men age 65 and older.
  • Family history – having a father or brother with the disease more than doubles the risk of prostate cancer according to the American Cancer Society. It’s even higher when there are multiple family members affected.
  • Race – prostate cancer occurs about 60% more often in African American men than in white American men.
  • Diet – research suggests higher dietary fat may be a contributing factor.
  • Lifestyle – sedentary lifestyle may also be a factor.
Bring Awareness to your Employees
Make September the month to bring more awareness to your employees, men and women alike, by recommending the following steps to better health:
Use their preventive health care benefits for annual check-ups and other preventive care.

Male employees over the age of 50 should get their annual prostate exam (PSA/DRE) as recommended by Health Net preventive guidelines.

Men of all ages should perform a monthly self-exam.

Eat a diet low in fat, high in fiber and foods rich in omega-3 fatty acids, such as vegetables, fruits, whole grains and fish.

Maintain an optimal weight and stay active with regular exercise.
